Excavators are assigned a small area to clear out. As pieces are found, they are assigned a number, added to the map, and finally extracted. Large pieces are wrapped in plaster before removal. Smaller pieces are collected in bags or vials.
Dava is clearing the area around this thoracic vertebra, so it can be removed. While digging, she looks for fragments of tooth, tusk or bone.
So far, she has found several pieces of bone and tooth enamel!
