The Future of KT

How do I start this?

When I first began KT in 2006, I didn't expect it to last long. It was just to amuse myself and my immediate circle of friends. To my surprise, it got somewhat popular, peaking around 2010. It has been slowly declining since then. Comments on social media have decreased. Traffic to the website has decreased.

At the same time, I recently was promoted at the paleontological site where I work. I have more responsibilities, and I work longer hours. After seven years of reliable, weekly updates, I find myself having to skip weeks or update a day late.

So I am left with a choice. I very much want to continue the comic--I still enjoy it, and I'm not quite done with my story. At the same time, it's clear that the current set-up is not working. Long-term, I have to decide if it's time to start winding the comic toward the end I have had in mind all along. More immediately, I have to decide if the weekly update schedule needs to change. That's where you come in.

Poll #1912400 KT Schedules

When should KT update?

Keep to the Wednesday schedule, even if sometimes, it's late
Switch to Mondays, so maybe it won't be late as often
Switch to Tuesdays, so maybe it won't be late as often

I chose keep Wednesdays because I honestly don't know. I understand how real life gets in the and I would be happy to see an update whenever you get a chance to do it. :)

I second this :)

I really don't mind when you choose to update KT, but I love it. Even if I don't comment, I do read it every week. :)

As long as you still update, the day of the week doesn't matter to me :) Have you thought about also hosting the comic on Tumblr?
May. 7th, 2013 02:48 am (UTC)
I have considered it, yes. Actually, when I first started the comic, many readers suggested I also post at DeviantArt. Later, the suggestion became Flickr. Now, Tumblr is what I hear most. The problem is that these are moving targets. I can start posting at Tumblr, but in a few years, readers will move to some other site.

As it is, I already post to my own site, to LJ, and then post links on Facebook. I've tried to compromise a bit by including the cross-posting buttons on each comic page here at LJ. Readers need only to share.

How about, update it on whatever schedule makes you happy? I'll come look whenever it's going to update, and won't whinge if it's late, I promise.

As long as you are updating I'm happy! But it needs to be something you enjoy too. I'm sorry to hear that things have slowed down. I always enjoy reading it.

Really, whenever you get to the comic is fine.

I voted to keep it to Wednesdays, but really, I don't mind when updates occur, even if they are sometimes late or you have to skip a week now and then or something. Whatever works best for you is what you should go with! I just enjoy reading it. :)

Congratulations on your promotion! :D

I will read any day it shows up (all hail RSS feeds) so I didn't vote.

I agree with what everyone else so far has said - I don't mind what day you update it on, because I've really enjoyed reading the comic (even if I don't usually comment on it)! Though I did vote for Wednesday, if only because it's the one you've been going with for so long.

Tumblr might be a fantastic option if you're interested in getting more traffic - I know some webcomics have been hosted there - but really, I do understand that life can be rough. Congratulations on the promotion too!

Congrats on the promotion!! I only picked Wednesdays 'cause I figured they worked best for you. Whatever fits into your schedule is best, I think!!

I don't mind when you update, I just want you to be able to update. If a different day fits in your schedule, then do that. Let us know if you have to take some time for work, I think we can all understand that!

As said before, cross posting in Tumblr could be a good signal boost as well.

I'm another "doesn't comment much, but constant reader"- I don't mind what day you post on. Make it whatever fits your schedule easiest. Real life happens, (congrats on that promotion, btw!), and usually comes first. No one will die from the comic running late. We can be amused whenever. :)

Many people have suggested tumblr- I use it for the company I work with, and it is super easy to queue up posts when you have a few and to schedule them ahead of time. Maybe not what you want to switch to- and honestly, I'm not familiar with the full capability of lj's posting ability anymore- but maybe a good place to crosspost to. There are a lot of pony fans- of all gens, over there who'd appreciate the story and excellent humor that I've come to appreciate.

Chose Mondays, but, you could also go to every other week, or once a month. Real life intrudes, and it's no fun, but necessary.

Hope you are well, otherwise!

I've been following since you started even though I don't comment. I'm with whoever said it doesn't matter when you update. I'll read it if it's a month late or a day late. :) I also like the suggestion of tumblr. Being able to cue posts might be helpful for you. In the end I'd love to see the whole thing compiled into a book. What an AWESOME read that would be... Good luck!
