How did Spackles get the fridge door open? Your guess is as good as mine!

My husband and I go hiking twice a week. Thursday, I noticed I was having a harder time than usual, although I couldn't figure out why. Later, I found out. It was 106° outside! That's 41° Celsius for all the smart people non-Americans in the audience. I know Texas is famous for its brutal weather, but it's not usually that hot until August. Luckily, we have a working air conditioner this year. I wish I could take it with me on hikes.

There were quite a few requests for a Minty-in-the-Box wallpaper last week. It's pretty simple, so I'm offering it as a freebie. Of course, if you feel like you should leave a tip, that is fine, too.

Speaking of tips! If anyone has opinions on Paypal's micropayments option, I'd like to hear them. Last week, someone donated 50 cents, of which Paypal took 32 cents. This aggression will not stand, man! Micropayments promise to reduce my fees, so I can keep a bit more of your donations, but I am wary. This is Paypal we're talking about, here. There's always some catch.

Luckily, we have a working air conditioner this year. I wish I could take it with me on hikes.

Sadly, my A/C is no match for my apartment building, where the boiler runs all the time, even in the summer.

Meaning I still need to have fans running constantly to keep things tolerable. x_x

[One would think they'd have it replaced with something built within the last ten years, and during the summer when no one will miss it...]

Ooooh Minty with two ponytails (first one being her real tail) and Kimono with her hair up are sooooo cute! I guess even having to put your hair up cause its hot is cute when done by My Little Ponies. Where did you find that little star clip in Kimono's hair?
Jun. 29th, 2009 01:06 pm (UTC)
If I remember correctly, it's a Bratz accessory.

I've seen hair clips like that at local dollar stores. They're perfectly pony-sized, and are quite inexpensive, especially if you buy them in packages of, say ten or twenty or whatever.

They're quite cute.

I have almost the exact same tiny clips, and my G3 ponies wear them. O.o

If it was a donation, it should have been sent as a "gift" (under the Personal tab) and therefore not incurred fees. Mind you, I don't think everyone knows about Paypal's new way of ripping you off payment system, but maybe you might want to put a note on your tip jar or something...?
Jun. 29th, 2009 01:12 pm (UTC)
Ah, I misread you...

No, it wasn't marked as a gift. Hrm. Looks like I'll need to add the note when I update the button, and hope that people will read the instructions. :-/
Jun. 29th, 2009 05:32 pm (UTC)
Okay, I looked at my donation page at Paypal, and it doesn't give an option to mark it as a gift. Hrm. I'll need to see if I can set it up some way other than using the donation button.
Jun. 29th, 2009 09:37 pm (UTC)
Wow...yeah, I looked up the donation thing on Paypal...seems like you can't send personal payments when you use a donation button because it counts as a business. Man, Paypal is really screwing everyone over. Srsly, how do you "tax" a donation?
Jun. 29th, 2009 09:42 pm (UTC)
Paypal is run by jerks! :P I suppose I could set up a non-donation, gimme-money page, but I think I'd have to set the amount people would donate. I can't say I'm crazy about that idea. :-/
Jun. 29th, 2009 09:47 pm (UTC)
Why would it have to be a set amount? Maybe you can set up an account specifically for Paypal donations and just give the address on the page, instructing people to send as a gift? Since really, that's what it is.

*scratches head* I'm pretty sure that's how it would have to work. If I were going to have a Paypal page I could link to, which would redirect to the wallpaper page after a donation was given, I think I'd have to use a sale/invoice page, which would require a set "sale" amount. Maybe I'm wrong... I dunno.

It's either that, or setting up a convoluted "go to Paypal and donate to this address, and then I'll email you a link to your wallpapers" kind of thing.

Wow, yeah, seems like there's GOT to be a catch with that Micro-payment plant.. they offer frighteningly few details on it. :\

I hope Kimono's ice cream didn't melt!
Jun. 29th, 2009 02:00 pm (UTC)
Bwa! Spackles looks so comfy. Too bad the ice cream's gonna be kinda melty. ^_^

From what I understand, the micropayment option takes a larger percentage but a smaller flat fee, and the difference evens out around the $12 mark. If you scroll down this page on the Etsy forums, some posted a breakdown of the two fee structures with various payment amounts. If most of your donations are under $12, you'd probably be better off with micropayments. ^_^
Jun. 29th, 2009 02:52 pm (UTC)
Aha! Hmm... most of my donations are well below $12. I do plan on selling things eventually, though, and those could possibly go above $12. If you switch to micro, is it reversible? They're all shifty like that, luring you to switch plans, then making you stick with them.
Jun. 29th, 2009 03:20 pm (UTC)
I'm not sure whether you can switch back and forth. You definitely can't say, "Oh, this transaction is for $40, so I want to use the old fee structure, but this transaction is for $3, so I want to use the new fee structure." Some people who use it set up a second Paypal account w/ the new structure and direct smaller payments there.

Amazon's payment service is starting to sound a lot more appealing. They would have taken only 8 cents from my 50 cent donation.
Jun. 29th, 2009 05:41 pm (UTC)
I know exactly how they feel! our AC has been broken for over a week now -_-
Jun. 29th, 2009 05:54 pm (UTC)
I love Spackles. He cracks me up =D Smart duck... haha. Nooowww if only it would get hot here...
Jun. 29th, 2009 11:22 pm (UTC)
You're in Texas too? I didn't know!

Oh my lord, this weather has just been godawful hasn't it? Up here in north Houston we haven't had a sniff of rain for weeks... the pond in our front yard is so low that pretty soon we're going to be able to wade out there and just pick up the fish. Pre-fried, even!
Jun. 30th, 2009 05:13 pm (UTC)
Oh, gosh! Houston? Your humidity is even worse than ours! We finally got some rain this morning. I think it's been well over a month since we've had any.
Jun. 30th, 2009 05:22 pm (UTC)
Lucky D: Some thunderclouds sat over us yesterday like they were thinking about it, but the rain just never came.

I've been watching my MLP First Season on DVD so I was very much looking forward to your strip this week!!!

I have to say I LOVE how their hair is up, you immediately know that it's hot because that's what the rest of us do on hot days!

PS: Congrats on surviving the hot weather!!!! It hottest I've ever been out in is +43 Celsius and all I did was melt!
Jun. 30th, 2009 05:17 pm (UTC)
43 Celsius is about the hottest I've been in. Some areas of Texas get a bit hotter, and we do have the occasional freakish events, like Satan's Storm.
Jun. 30th, 2009 03:02 pm (UTC)
Smart little duck! *laughs*

I just wish we *had* some sun up here, the northeast coast has had rain for over two weeks:(
Jun. 30th, 2009 04:56 pm (UTC)
Looks like those two need to go grocery shopping, lol.
Jul. 3rd, 2009 07:34 pm (UTC)
Their hairstyles are so cute!

I'm in Arkansas, and everyone has been saying "It's usually not this bad until, like, August!" So I feel your pain. This is the part of the year where I go outside A) to get to and from vehicles, B) for fireworks, and C) when it's dark. Lol.
