Here in Texas, we have something called a fruit pie, a dessert you have probably heard of if you've ever watched "King of the Hill." It is not a pie in the general sense, but a pastry shell covered in a sugar glaze and filled with some sort of goo--cherry, apple, pecan or whatever. I decided I wanted a lemon fruit pie and quickly discovered they could not be found! Fruit pies are ubiquitous; you can find them in any given grocery or convenience store. Every place had cherry and apple, but not lemon. After three days of searching, I finally found my coveted pies. I'm not sure why I could not find them, but at the time, it felt like some sort of conspiracy.

If anyone is going to the San Diego Comic Con and would be willing to pick up a couple things for me, please let me know. I will gladly pay for them, plus shipping. You would be guaranteed my undying devotion (or something like that) and make a couple geeks very happy.

Yay for seeing Minty's workplace again, it always makes me lol. (Seriously, wouldn't you love having a Minty to make watercooler talk with?)

Nice perspective in panel #2--Minty looks so SRS in 2, 3, and 4. And I don't blame her--I know what it's like to crave a particular dessert!

But we've had a lot of vignettes here lately. Only one comic of the last ten was plot-furthering, and that was Kimono packing away the gift pillow from Breezie. And not that KT has a huge, overarching, supercomplicated plot...but I'd like to see some continuity furtherance!

...that makes me sound really whiny, and I don't mean to be. It isn't that any of those said ten comics failed to make me laugh (well, except the pillow one, but that one was good too, it wasn't meant to be funny), I'm just dying to know what's going to HAPPEN. =) There, that sounds better!

I feel your pain. Originally, I tried to stay away from continuity altogether, and now that I've introduced it, I struggle to find the right balance. I was hoping that Kimono getting ready for grad school and doing volunteer work would be good. But don't worry! Interesting things are about to happen for Kimono. ^_^

They are similar to turnovers, but a little different. I'm not sure how to describe them. The love child of a pie and a Pop Tart?

weird thing is that a couple of months ago we literally did have a lemon shortage - every place i went was out of lemon juice, and i'm talking BIG groceries stores, plenty different ones just did Not have lemon juice (or lemons) for almost two months - i thought i would go insane

then one day as i was in a grocery store again they had the lemon juice's that are shaped like lemons - so i looked for MY lemon juice, still no luck but i must have picked up like 5 of the other just in case the shortage continued lol

Those little Hostess pies? We call them fruit pies or pocket pies around here, depending on who you're talking to. I like the apple ones, myself, but the lemon are good, too. I haven't seen those in ages... and am now struck with a serious craving. Good thing tomorrow will include time for a trip to the store.

I always love reading the little signs in Minty's cubicle. They make me laugh.

Out of curiosity, what's a "dew cake"? Is it something just for the comic, or is it an actual type of cake?
Jul. 15th, 2009 03:57 pm (UTC)
Hostess does make them, but most Texans will tell you they're a shoddy imitation of the Mrs. Baird's fruit pies. ~_^

Is it something just for the comic, or is it an actual type of cake?

Something for the comic. ^_^ Dew cake is the most popular dessert in Ponyland. It's a small, spongy cake, sort of like angel food cake, injected with jelly and drizzled with a gooey frosting that resembles dew on top. Some are lightly toasted to make the outer edges crispy, but most ponies prefer them untoasted.

What does the yellow sign and the white sign say?
Jul. 15th, 2009 08:54 am (UTC)
The white one, if I remember correctly, "There are 10 types of ponies in the world: those who understand binary and those who don't", and the yellow one, "FTW!"

hahaha. good to know that Minty uses Firefox.

Hrrrm the only time we get fruit pie things here is at Christmas when they make those Fruit Mince pies.... I cant STAND those.

I will settle for a lemon tart anyday, they are full of lemony goodness.

I think everyone is confusing fruit pies with whatever turnovers or other filled pastries they have in their area. These are different. They're like... portable pudding in a shell.

The fruit pies hereabouts used to have recognizable bits of fruit in them. (Who'd a thunk it?) But in the past several years, they have contained nothing but a syrupy goo that has little flavor but sugar.

I've seen them in apple, cherry, lemon, and chocolate, though none of them deserve the flavor label they're given.
Jul. 15th, 2009 03:15 pm (UTC)
Mm, chocolate! Filled with an almost-pudding-like substance...

I must now get some.
Jul. 15th, 2009 03:02 pm (UTC)
I had always assumed that the fruit pies mentioned on KotH were just McDonald's fruit pies... well, live and learn!

Hee, Minty! :D
Jul. 15th, 2009 04:03 pm (UTC)
They are similar to those! It's a shell that resembles pie crust that's stuffed with a sizable amount of filling. Like I told someone above, it's like having a portable pudding.
Jul. 15th, 2009 03:02 pm (UTC)
I know where they are! They're in New Jersey! I know, because my husband really digs the apple ones, and all we can find are lemon and cherry!
Jul. 15th, 2009 03:10 pm (UTC)
Ooh fruit pies! I haven't thought about those in a while. I also prefer the lemon ones. Or chocolate, although not a fruit, tended to be sold in the same area, also tends to be WAY harder to find!
Jul. 15th, 2009 04:04 pm (UTC)
Lemon and chocolate are definitely my faves. ^_^
Jul. 15th, 2009 03:38 pm (UTC)
Oh the Mrs. Baird apple pies are the best, the ones with the sugary frosting on them! YUM! I think just one of those is seriously 30 grams of fat, but they're SO GOOD!

And while lemon isn't my personal fav, I can totally understand having a craving for them!

So does this mean Minty and Kimono also live in Texas?
Jul. 15th, 2009 04:05 pm (UTC)
YES! Finally, someone who knows what a fruit pie is. :D

Kimono and Minty live in Ponyland, not Texas. Hence, no fruit pies. They have dew cakes instead. ^_^

Do you guys get Hubig's pies in Texas? For us in Louisiana that is the only true "fruit pie" out there. I'm particularly fond of the pineapple ones and the chocolate ones. Though with the chocolate ones they are best if you zap them in the microwave for a few seconds. Mmm.
Jul. 15th, 2009 04:06 pm (UTC)
I haven't seen Hubig's before. We prefer Mrs. Baird's, and we'll settle for Hostess in a pinch. I'd have to be starving to eat one of the Hostess pies, though.
Jul. 15th, 2009 04:07 pm (UTC)
Ah, the legendary quest for lemon. XD Now I'm tempted to look around and see if any local stores carry fruit pies, but I'm sure they'd be from an inferior brand, oh noes.
Jul. 15th, 2009 04:12 pm (UTC)
I'm sending a fruit pie to Dani. I can send one your way, too, if you want!
Jul. 15th, 2009 04:59 pm (UTC)
I'm assuming they're similar to the Hostess Fruit Pies from all those comic ads in the 70's. mmmm.. Hostess Fruit Pies! I'm actually not sure if I've ever eaten one.
Jul. 15th, 2009 07:38 pm (UTC)
Yep! They're like the Hostess pies, although Hostess is not my preferred brand.
