Way back when I was in junior high, DC Comics killed off Superman, and the media made big deal out of it. Superman came back (with a mullet!) and everything went back to normal. Then, a few years ago, Marvel killed off Captain America, and again, the media made a big deal out of it. He, too, has come back, of course. So when Batman died recently, there was no coverage, no media blitz. The news outlets finally learned that no one stays dead in comics except, as the saying goes, Uncle Ben. It caused so little stir, in fact, that I didn’t hear about it until months after it happened, having been away from comic books lately.

Now, I know some of you are wondering who Sue Dibny is. Sue was the wife of a second tier character, Elongated Man, and when DC killed her a few years ago, they made a big deal about it. Someone knows the identities of all the superheroes! None of their families are safe! It was a terrific series. What we, the comic reading public, didn’t know was DC Comics was about to enter a quagmire. See, Dr. Light assaulted Sue Dibny. The second tier heroes caught him and decided to do a mindwipe on him, but Batman walked in, so of course, they had to mindwipe him, too. So the death of Sue Dibny led to the death of a dejected Blue Beetle, and the death of Blue Beetle led to Wonder Woman killing Max Lord, which made everyone really mad at Wonder Woman. And Batman, having this overwhelming sense that he can’t trust anyone, released a spy program that was used by the O.M.A.C. Project, targeting all the other heroes. That caught the attention of a Superman from an alternate universe, along with his other leftover, alternate buddies from convoluted continuity, who were all living in some bubble thing. So the alternate heroes started fighting with the regular heroes, and now DC has split off into a multiverse again.

Thanks a lot, Dr. Light.

You're talking about Infinite Crisis, right?

I only ever read one prelude, but the Blue Beetle died in it. I know OMAC was involved in Crisis. I think I have 2 Infinite Crisis graphic novels here somewhere that'd explain the majority of the story to me, but I am so insanely backlogged on comics and novels right now I don't know when I'll read it. (I have a stack almost a foot high of comics/novels that need reading. I also have the start of Secret Invasion, which I haven't read either. It finished almost a year ago and I haven't read it yet. Some fan I am.)

Geek rant off! Sorry. heh

I just summed up Identity Crisis, Infinite Crisis and Final Crisis for you, yes. I was nice and didn't discuss anything Black Lantern-related, though, since my husband hasn't read far enough to know what Sue and Ralph Dibny did.

I heard from Comic Con that Batman not really dead but lost in time if that makes sense :)
Jul. 27th, 2009 01:31 pm (UTC)
Yeah, he's stuck in the past. Which, of course, means he's technically dead at the moment, like everyone else who lived eons ago.

Isn't Dr. Light that wimp that Raven terrorizes all the time in the Teen Titans cartoon?
Jul. 27th, 2009 07:32 am (UTC)
Poor Aquaman! No one even noticed . . . except Jean in Payroll, of course. ;)

Isn't Barry Allen back from the dead now? I mean, Barry Allen. That's just not right. He's been dead, what, 20 years?

The best commentary I've ever seen about Identity Crisis is this:

Jul. 27th, 2009 01:37 pm (UTC)
Oh, Jean in Payroll. You will notice that he stopped picking up his check a few months ago, even though he's been dead a couple years now. Hee. But yeah, Barry Allen is back, although I haven't gotten to read that series yet. I'm excited about it, though, since Geoff Johns is writing. If he could save Hal from the red hot mess that was GL continuity, have it make sense, and be fun to read, then I think he can handle Barry.

OMG, that strip is hilarious! Is that from a webcomic, or is it a one-off thing?

I'm still pining over the loss of Blue Beetle. I've heard he came back recently, but I'm still waiting to see if that'll actually stick.

I have no idea why they saw fit to kill Bruce. Obviously that one's not going to stick.

If I'm not mistaken, we're on Blue Beetle III now. I haven't heard about Ted Kord coming back, unless he's a Black Lantern now. Haven't gotten that far.

Killing Bruce doesn't bother me. Giving him a son and naming him Damien, so we all know he's evil, bugs the heck out of me, though.

My eyes still cross trying to understand the Dibny Debacle, but I laughed out loud at Dr. Fate's "finders keepers"!

As per the previous comment: sorry! I did try.:)

I swear the Sue Dibny storyline was mirrored on The Young & the Restless at some point. XD (Although if that were true, Sue would show up alive again ten years later when her actress realized her movie career was never taking off.)
Jul. 27th, 2009 07:27 pm (UTC)
It is entirely possible Sue will come back to life ten years later. Sooner or later, they all do.

I STILL get a huge kick out of all the doll sized props you have. Doll pepperoni / salami , a fire extinguisher, and for some reason a giant wrench thing.

Haha, I reread the page after reading your history lesson at the bottom and wound up laughing even harder. x3

That's it, I'm sticking to Archie comics and Kimono's Townhouse. o.0

The subject of comic's superhero is foreign territory to me. However, on the the Retro Teletoon channel, they've been playing Filmation's "The New Adventures of Batman" with their recycled Star Trek Animated music.

I SOOOOO wish they would kill Bat-mite off. What we're they smokin' when they came up with him?

Question: Can we expect any of the Watchmen to be in Cooking With Superman, or something concerning Minty's hobbies?
Jul. 27th, 2009 09:22 pm (UTC)
Quite possibly! CWS episodes are written as inspiration occurs. I don't just pick a character and force a story around him. So if something Watchmen-related pops into my brain, you can bank on it being made. ^_^

now I remember why I never got into comics.... lol, but I had a bf that was and I heard ALL about Superman Red & Blue....

but they killed Batman!! You can't kill Batman!!!!!

You know, sometimes I wonder how Minty can keep track of it all, what with all those socks she has to keep sorted!

I've spent all day on the Wiki because of you reading about superheroes. <3

Blackest Night looks very good. I like the lead up concept. There's a power and emotion attached to each color of the spectrum. Star Sapphires have rings now, which means I can have one and Steve can wear a GL ring and we WILL BE KING AND QUEEN OF GEEKDOM!

Have some Saturday Morning Watchmen. Always good for a drive-by YouTubing.

Jul. 28th, 2009 07:52 pm (UTC)
Oh GAWD, I forgot about that video! Comedian trying to kiss Laurie is so, so wrong.

The only thing bugs me about the new rings is that they gave one to indigo. If one tertiary color gets a ring, shouldn't the others? And if that happens, how weird would a Yellow-Green Lantern be?

(Clearly, I am thinking about this too much.)
