Of course, there also is the “This is Unix” line from Jurassic Park, but I really love that movie.

We're still a tiny bit shy of the goal for this month's bonus comic, so be sure to vote today!

And, of course, the virus and the Apple laptop in Independence Day.

OMG, yes! Everyone knows aliens use Linux. XD

Hilarious! We just recently watched Man of the Year for the first time recently. I remember a few goofy glitches from my web dev past that you would think wouldn't cause a problem...but they sure did! It's been so long I can't remember specifically, alas.

The double letter glitch just struck me as so ridiculous. If you choose between three candidates, wouldn't you make each name--the whole name--an option within an array? Doing it any other way would be more open to error, and more importantly, it would take a lot longer to write. There's nothing a geek hates more than something that creates more work than is necessary.

I'll agree with you there! I worked for a big name shop and some of the redundant stuff that went on was awful. Projects were worked under tight deadlines and there was never time to do things properly. We had a JavaScript library called the BFH - Big F*cking Hack to workaround the workarounds :-(

Thinking about other stupid tech in movies... watching The Net now is absolutely hilarious.

I've actually seen all those movies mentioned. I guess I'm a tech geek too. :p

I'm like that with tech movies. Only I usually wind up having to recite the MST3k mantra a few times when I watch them.

You should have put a scene from Masterminds in there. I saw it once, circa 1999. It seemed to suggest when you hack into a computer, you have to play a video game (in this case, a ship flying down a bendy tunnel) and if you could get to the end without dying (not touching the walls in this case) you get admin access to the system.

I am not making this up, I swear.

Oh, I could have put a long list of movies in there! I especially love films where someone hacking a computer causes all the street lights in the city to go haywire, or when someone writes a virus that actually looks like a virus. Oh, and don't forget, when a server goes down, you should duck, because there will be an explosion!

Hahaha, I read this strip on the same day I found:

Wow, that is horribad.
IRC is like... from the 80s. :P They're explaining it like it's some kind of Kewl New Thang, and it's in fact like CSI talking about this nifty hotness called "DNA testing."

"See, we just take some blood, and through a complicated process that being all CGI'd here, voila, we will know who the babydaddy is!"

Hahaa. I'm the same way with movies that feature hurricanes, or people who start small businesses (especially in NYC -- oh wow, going from "Hmm, maybe I could design shoes for a living!" to "Yay, gorgeous store on Park Avenue!" in one scene), or Realtors. If you have a lot of experience in just about any subject, you're not going to love movies about it. XD
