What fourth wall?

When I first started working at a comic shop, I was assigned the grueling task of sorting several long boxes of early 90's comics. If you collect comics, then you recognize this as Organizing a Stack of Crap. In amongst the expected Crisis This, Knightfall That, and Balent Catwoman, I spotted something interesting--a run of comics with Brian Bolland covers. I'm very fond of Bolland, and I'd never heard of the character, Animal Man. That was my introduction to the obscure hero who was just trying to make ends meet.

Fast forward a few years, and I was attending the final Wizard World Dallas. The DC panel endured many, many complaints about Grant Morrison, when one of the editors mentioned a new Animal Man series. My hand shot up, and I asked whether Bolland would be doing the covers, because his work on the 90's series was so iconic. I was told there were no plans to use Bolland. A few months later, though, the comic came out. Lo and behold, it had Bolland covers! It's probably coincidence, but I'm totally taking credit for it.

Heh, and here I thought the joke was going to be vegetarian vs omnivore based.

I didn't even know there was an Animal Man action figure: awesome.

Merely commenting to profess my complete adoration for Ted Kord. He's currently standing in front of my monitor pointing his gun at me. ^_^

(I'm vaguely hoping there'll be a Beetle and Booster CWS someday.)

They do make some beautiful music together. *sigh*

I am cursed. Cursed to always know obscure characters. Just once I want to be surprised about a character. I don't even research them, I've just _always_ heard about them for some reason.

It's funny, sometime last year I was listening to someone at Marvel talk on a podcast, and he made a joke to the effect of, "Maybe we should just use some obscure hero no one has ever heard of. Captain Hero or It, The Living Monolith or something." I'm sitting there shaking my head thinking, "Oh dear God, I know both of them." (For the record: Captain Hero "killed" Iron Fist in the 80's and was a sorta-kinda Captain Marvel wannabe in the sense it was a kid who turned into an adult superhero. Monolith is basically a sentient statue. A really big one. I think it eventually was able to alter it's size, similar to Giant Man. Fairly ridiculous concept.)

Funny comic overall, though. Breaking the 4th wall is always fun. Personally, I would have showed him being dragged out in a net or something in that last panel.

Your favorite hero is also pretty obscure. <3

He had a 50 issue run of his own comic! He's not THAT obscure.

All I can picture is how that couch scene looks in the front to you. XD

I adore that avatar... is that Skydancer?
Jan. 26th, 2010 02:19 am (UTC)
Yes she is, from Escape from Katrina. <3

BWAH. Last panel FTW!

Epic. Pure win. Last panel would make an awesome icon. XD

Hahahahahahaha!!! Brilliant!

I think Animal Man was featured either in Batman: The Brave & the Bold or The Justice League. I owe all my obscure DC hero knowledge to these two shows. ^^;
Jan. 25th, 2010 02:39 pm (UTC)
I've not seen any of The Brave & The Bold, so that must be it. I have all the Justice League Unlimited on DVD. He may have appeared in the background on that one, but I know there's no episode about him.

I cannot find a reference to him on TV at all online. >_< Maybe I'll have to go back through my DVR and see which episode it was...

Fourth wall? Que? ;)

I love your ability to manipulate and photograph Superman--I've never seen such panic in an action figure. :)
Jan. 25th, 2010 06:21 pm (UTC)
I was very amused to learn that Superman is so musclebound, he can't touch his ears. XD

Poor Supe -- there goes his entire concept of reality. Wait until he figures out he's a four-inch-tall plastic figure -- that'll really screw him up. XD

Love the last panel, LOL.

"But I'm still an action from Krypton, right? Right?! Guys?"
Jan. 25th, 2010 06:09 pm (UTC)

I was a little distracted by the lack of pants for Animal Man. XD
Jan. 25th, 2010 06:21 pm (UTC)
He has pants!
Jan. 25th, 2010 06:54 pm (UTC)
Yeah - no pants, and the suggestive string of sausages in the background.
Jan. 25th, 2010 08:48 pm (UTC)
I've not read Animal Man but the plot reminds me of bad TV series called Manimal which used to fascinate me as a kid

Jan. 25th, 2010 08:59 pm (UTC)
That last frame made me LOL! I love it!

Oh, the looks in that last panel...-XD
