Based on an actual conversation my husband and I had last week. I have a list of words I cannot stand to hear misused. He pointed out that the meaning of words change over time, but I won't have it.

Many apologies for the late update! As most of you know, I live in Texas, where we are having an outbreak of massive wildfires, in addition to a dust storm blowing in from Kansas. So far, there are no fires in my immediate area, but I've been breathing who-knows-what for about a week, and I've felt ill for days now. If you're in an affected area, stay safe and hang in there!

Hee~! I'm so with Kimono here. I have so, so many pet peeves like this (most of them Anglicisms.)

(And if I could make you smile once, great. You've made me smile so many times.)

The worst one for me is misuse of "irony."

*won't argue, for fear of incurring wrath*

Do you also want to punch everyone who uses 'literally' wrong? :D
That word gets me the most because It's a word with no equivalent as far as I can think of. Changing the meaning robs us of an important and vitally useful word!

YES. About six months ago, I was going to dedicate a comic to misuse of "literally." Then, I found this, and it spoiled my fun. Still gets on my nerves, though!

Hee! G1 cameo!

My most hated word mangle is people who say "Pacific" instead of "specific". SWEET JESUS, were you RAISED by WOLVES?

In RL news, I'm glad you aren't being directly affected by the fires - hope that you feel better soon, though. Your health is more important than updates. xxx

Interesting you should mention wolves, because MY pet peeve is people who calls them woofs. And people who say "Libary". And "Nucular". But mostly, "Woofs".

I want to know what other words are on your list.
Apr. 20th, 2011 11:07 pm (UTC)
"Ironic" is the biggest one. I hear way too many people (often journalists) use "ironic" when they mean "apropos." "Troops" is another one I hear misused a lot on TV. If we send out 500 troops (or 500 troupes, for that matter), how many people is that? :P And OMG, when someone says "people that" rather than "people who," it drives me crazy.

I also hate it when "-gate" is added to the end of a word to signal scandal, or "-holic" is added to signal addiction, but that's a regular ol' pet peeve rather than incorrect usage.

When a language quits evolving and growing, it's dead. So, we know that English is alive and kicking. XDDD
Apr. 20th, 2011 11:07 pm (UTC)
Oh! Well, in that case, I will start calling my computer a "turkey." Evolution.

Ahaha, my husband and I just had this conversation last night! We focused on how "accelerate" was misused, which eventually spawned "decelerate" - and that is apparently a nonsense word which shouldn't have meaning at all. Whew knew.
Apr. 20th, 2011 11:11 pm (UTC)
And yes, I just typed whew when I meant who. Not sure if I should claim that I was going for a silly accent or admit it was because I was up half the night discussing the misuse of words.

I'm moved to tears!!! :v:
The most abused word in german is "dramatic".
Last week my director wanted me to say "backwards" instead of "behind". X-x
I get stomachache from this! T^T

Thank you soooooo much for this episode!!!!!! <3<3<3<3<3<3<3
Apr. 21st, 2011 04:38 pm (UTC)
I'd never heard that about willy-nilly!

My personal pet peeve is "hopefully" when it's used as a replacement for "I hope."
Apr. 21st, 2011 09:26 pm (UTC)
I'm guilty of that one. XD I also say "people" instead of "persons!"
Apr. 22nd, 2011 03:17 pm (UTC)
Little Flitter! She was my favourite pony growing up. I still have her. Mine has her hair all in tiny braids though. You made my day in any case.
